President Maia Sandu met with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen during her visit to the US. The discussion focused on the anti-corruption actions taken by the authorities in Chisinau and the support we need to accelerate this process, as well as the current situation in Moldova and the region.
The Head of State said that our society welcomed the decision of the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to sanction 21 individuals and entities that have defrauded public money, controlled the judiciary and promoted Russian influence in Moldova. The leader in Chisinau expressed hope that the example of the United States will lead other countries to support our anti-corruption efforts, and that the list of sanctions will be completed with the names of other fugitives who have damaged the state.
President Maia Sandu stressed that the priority now is to recover stolen assets, including those from abroad. To this end, closer cooperation between Moldovan and foreign law enforcement institutions, including those of the US, is necessary. The subject of increasing US support for Moldova in the context of the multiple crises caused by Russia's war in Ukraine was also raised.
