President Maia Sandu met with Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a member of the committee. The discussion focused on regional security, compromised by Russia's aggression against Ukraine, and the crises it has triggered.
The Head of State underlined that Russian air strikes on Ukraine also threaten the security of our country, and citizens are facing severe energy and economic crises. President Maia Sandu thanked the United States for its assistance in mitigating the consequences of the war and stressed that we still need support to strengthen the defence sector and energy resilience, including investment in renewable energy. President also mentioned the importance of US support for Ukraine.
Officials also discussed the fight against corruption. In this context, President Maia Sandu stressed that the support of the United States in the fight against corruption, including by sanctioning those who have substantially damaged the state budget, is very important for the successful consolidation of democracy and the rule of law.
