President Maia Sandu met with a delegation of the United States Congress

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, met today with a delegation of the U.S. Congress, that is on a working visit to Chisinau. During the meeting, the security developments in the country and in the region, the major economic impact of the war in Ukraine on Moldova and the Moldovan-American relations were discussed.

The head of state thanked the United States for the close cooperation between our countries, for supporting the democratic processes and the implementation of modernisation projects. The President also thanked for the additional support announced by the U.S. in the context of the war in Ukraine, which has already been received in Chisinau. Members of the U.S. Congress expressed their appreciation for the authorities’ response and for the involvement of Moldovan citizens in managing the refugees’ crisis. They gave assurances that the U.S. will stand by Moldova in mitigating the consequences of the war, recovering the economy and ensuring energy security. They welcomed the reforms initiated by the governmental team and underscored, in this context, the importance of cleansing the justice system and fighting corruption.

President Maia Sandu emphasised that, despite the difficulties the country is going through, the reforms remain a priority, especially in the context of our European path. She underlined her desire to intensify the bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the U.S., including through the development of trade relations. President Sandu counts also on the support of the United States in modernising the country, fighting against corruption and strengthening democracy.
