The Head of State, President Maia Sandu, discussed today with the Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, about the most difficult and urgent chapter to implement in the European Union accession negotiations.
During the discussions, President Maia Sandu noted that the fight against corruption and the building of a strong and honest justice system is the fundamental condition for creating a fair society in Moldova, and not just an important commitment for the accession process under Chapter 23, “Judiciary and Fundamental Rights.”
“However, it is not enough to create the necessary conditions for the justice system to clean itself and ensure that everyone is equal before the law. Professional integrity and more courage from judges and prosecutors are needed,” noted the head of state.
The President emphasized that, over the years, corruption in Moldova has been turned into a weapon against the country's development and progress. “Eliminating corruption takes time. But precisely because there is no other way to build a democratic society, where the rule of law prevails, it is necessary for the justice system to take faster and more determined steps,” concluded President Sandu.
